The Children’s Cemetery is located in the center of Astypalea island. Since 1995 findings have been discovered, dating back to the 5th-4th millennium. So far over 3,000 buried babies have been discovered in the cemetery area.
The ancient inhabitants placed their dead babies in vases, symbolizing the female womb. It is rumored that babies from all over the Mediterranean Sea were buried here. The causes that justify such a large number of buried babies have not been identified until today.
